Simple Steps to Water-Damaged Drywall Repair

Drywalls are sheets of finishing material used in construction for interior walls and ceilings. They are easy to install and durable as well, needing only minor maintenance from time to time.

But water damage is a common problem when it comes to drywalls. Water-damaged walls can be a hazard to you and your family if not dealt with properly. Here are the steps to drywall repair you can follow.

Repair the Leak First
Before you do any actual repair work on your walls, it’s best to find the source of the water damage first. Your drywalls won’t be repaired properly if the cause of the leak is not addressed. You can trace the leak by removing the damaged portion of your drywall and following where the watermarks come from. Wear protective equipment when doing this step.

Remove the Damaged Drywall
Once the source of the leak has been dealt with, it’s time to remove the damaged drywall. Place down tarps to catch any excess drywall pieces and debris so that cleanup will be a breeze. Measure the size of the hole that you need to make before doing any cutting.

Cut out a rectangle or square-shaped portion of the damaged area using a keyhole saw. This is done so that it’s easier to patch it all up when you’re done with the repairs.

Replace the Drywall
After removing the old drywall and measuring the hole, place drywall clips around it and secure it tightly with drywall screws. Cut out a patch with the same measurements from a new sheet of drywall and secure it to the drywall clips. Be careful not to over-tighten it and make sure all of the corners are properly lined up before driving the screw.

Once the screws have been placed, apply primer on both sides of the patch. Cover the entire surface and let it dry out overnight before applying additional coatings. Add paint to give your new drywall some color and make the repair much more pleasant to look at.
